About
Multiphase flows exhibits very rich dynamics and are widely present in natural and industrial processes, yet their complexity continues to challenge experimental investigation. Validated experimental data is of key importance for models, even for resolved simulations. This colloquium focuses on recent advances in experimental measurement techniques that enable new physical insights into multiphase flow behavior across different scales.
Key topics include:
- Advanced optical diagnostics for multiphase flows (e.g. advanced high-speed imaging, Tomographic PIV)
- Non-optical techniques including but not limited to X-ray imaging, MRI, ultrasound imaging/velocimetry, and electrical capacitance tomography, radar
- Validation and uncertainty of measurement modalities, benchmarking
- Dynamics of droplet formation, breakup, and coalescence, interfacial transport, phase change in complex flow environments, and contact line dynamics
- Bubble dynamics in multiphase systems, including growth, coalescence, and breakup, heat/mass transfer effects, bubble dispersion and velocity/concentration distributions
- Transport phenomena in particle-laden flows, particle interaction, dispersion, aggregation, and velocity/concentration distributions
The colloquium will focus on how advanced measurement techniques provide new physical understanding, enable quantitative characterization of multiphase flows, and reveal mechanisms that remain inaccessible with conventional measurement techniques. It will bring together experimental researchers to exchange methodologies, identify current limitations, and define future directions for multiphase flow measurements.
